Week 11 Newsletter
19/03/2023It's the last week of term, which means this is the final newsletter of this academic year! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who's come to any of our meetings since September - whether that was because you're a classicist, to be in the plays, or just for the banter - and I really hope you've enjoyed what we've put on. If you have a spare two minutes (after you've read the newsletter, of course) we've got a short evaluation survey available here that we'd love you to fill out so we can make our events even better next year. If you can't make it to our murder mystery or AGM we hope to see you back again for the ball or in September, and hope you have a great Easter break and a positive exam season.
Week 11: Murder Mystery Night, 65 Oakfield Avenue, Thursday 23/03/23, 6pm
Our penultimate assembly of the term is another one that'll require you to be brainy as well as boozy: it's our classic Murder Mystery party! You expected it to just be a normal night at Alexandrians, showing up for some drinks and good chats, only to find that one of the members has been murdered before you arrived! Everybody's a suspect, and nobody's allowed to leave until the case is solved, so you better get sleuthing (because Bakehouse is booked for 8:30).
AGM, 65 Oakfield Avenue, Thursday 30/03/23
Our Annual General Meeting is fast approaching, so if you’ve enjoyed our events this year and want to take a more active role in planning what we do (or you just think you could do a better job), why not run for a position on the board? Our constitution is available to read through here for a better idea of what each board member does specifically, and we’d love to have you on board! All you need to do to run for a position is:
- be a paying, full society member (this requires you to be a fully matriculated UofG student)
- be nominated and seconded for your position by other society members (you can nominate yourself, but need to be seconded by someone else).
- email details of your nomination and seconder to the society’s current secretary, Tobias Cooper, at 2650626C@student.gla.ac.uk by Wednesday 29/03
- prepare a short (2 minute) speech to deliver on the day of the AGM explaining why you would like the position and why you would be suited to the role. If you have any more questions or would like more information about the process, feel free to get in touch with any present board member, as they’d all be happy to help. Good luck!
Antiquities Ball, The Grosvenor Hotel, G12 0TB Thursday 25/05/23, 7pm
Enter into Elysium and join the blessed as we dine and revel into the night! We are pleased to announce the 2023 Glasgow University Antiquities Ball. A celebration for all entranced by the past, legend, and myth, but all are welcome! Our theme is "Elysium Nights." Join us for a three-course meal, complimentary reception of sparkling wine, and dancing into the night at the Grosvenor Hotel in the West End. Tickets are live now, available here or at the link in our bio, and are limited, so get them soon if you’re hoping to go!
Welfare Team Contacts
As the semester continues, we'd like to remind folk about the ways people can get in touch with our welfare team if there are any issues. We want to create the best possible environment for everyone at our meetings, so please do not hesitate to contact our team!
We have a confidential welfare email: gualexandrianwelfare@outlook.com
You can also fill in a Google form (that can be anonymous if desired) that will go straight to the team. Available here and in our Instagram bio.
And of course, our welfare officers Rob and Emily will be happy to talk to you in person at any Alexandrian event - just pull them aside!
Membership
Want to join us? Membership is £5 for the semester. You can join at any point in the year, so don't worry if you still want to join! This membership allows you to become an official member of the society and also entitles you to some of the free wine, snacks and non-alcoholic alternatives we provide each week. We encourage people, especially returning students, to pay for the semester (if they didn't buy a year membership last semester) as soon as possible! However, we don't ask for membership the first few weeks to allow people to try the society out and see if they'd like to join, but we expect people to have a membership to attend meetings after Week 3 - the way we can make our events so funky fresh is by being able to channel membership money back into the society, so please join as soon as possible!
To buy a membership, please visit our SRC Website Page, which can be found here, and sign in/make an SRC account with your GUID. Then you will have the option to buy a membership. Unfortunately, we are having issues with our bank account at the moment so will not be able to accept bank transfers as payment. However, we can also receive cash payments at meetings (and we may have a card reader, though this is not guaranteed).
Thank you again, and hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday!
Tobias Cooper Alexandrian Society Secretary 2022-23
